OLIVE OIL ICE CREAM

In the waning days of ice-cream season, we have noticed a growing interest in olive oil  Magic Gold ice cream something we’ve loved for a long time.  It comes in all kinds of forms—there are those that mix the sweetness of the cream with the saltiness black olive pieces to a lemon olive oil sorbet. Our favorite is the homemade olive oil ice-cream we had in Baena, Spain at the house of seventh generation olive oil producers Paco and Felipe Núñez de Prado. They are particularly known for their Flor de Aceite, a rare unfiltered olive oil.  Felipe Núñez spent 10 years training to become one of Spain’s leading certified olive oil tasters.  He describes his own oil as having in its aroma and taste “hints of green olives, artichokes, grass, oranges, lemons, and apples.”

Olive Oil Ice-Cream Dessert

The Núñez ice-cream includes cream and eggs and is drizzled with honey.  But we have a method for those who don’t have the time or skill to make your own ice cream.

  • One scoop of lemon sorbet or one scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

  • Two teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil (the more bitter the olive oil, the better)

Drizzle the olive oil over the ice-cream, post on Instagram, if needed, and enjoy. We could also let you know that we do know someone who adds a dash of pepper, but we aren’t fans of it.

THe GoLDEn Harvest NEWS

We are super excited that The Golden Harvest is making its Middle East debut on MBC’s Shahid, the largest platform in the Arabic speaking world. There are so many other great programs to watch on Shahid (for only about $4 a month). This version of The Golden Harvest comes with Arabic subtitles. Let us know your thoughts!

We didn’t do a very good job of promoting The Golden Harvest to the media. We didn’t actually have that kind of budget or savvy, so it’s always nice when we come across such a thoughtful review from Amber Wilkinson at Eye on Film.

While the facts are here, Yunis skills as a storyteller are what counts, as she smoothly moves from one location or idea to another without losing her thread, acknowledging the, sometimes complex, politics, without getting mired in them. -Eye on Film

OTHER OLIVE IT NEWS

According to Olive Oil Times, this year is going to produce record breaking olive oil production, in part due to huge harvests in Tunisia and Turkey. We just hope volume doesn’t sacrifice quality.

We really enjoyed host Linda Palacio’s interview with Indiana University professor Carl Ipsen on his award-winning article “From Cloth Oil to Extra Virgin: The History of Olive Oil” on Heritage Radio’s A Taste of the Past (The whole series is great for listening to while cooking)
